OVERVIEW

The speciality of Oral Pathology and Microbiology aims at gaining adequate knowledge and the required expertise to carry out the investigatory procedures.

The department deals with clinical pathology by performing incisional biopsy, exfoliative and aspiration cytology , hematology and diagnostic histopathology with routine hematoxylin and eosin, special stains, immunohistochemistry along with molecular studies like PCR for the purpose of reporting cases and research work. The department also receives biopsies from various private practitioners in and around Bangalore.

The department is highly able to interpret lab findings thus helping other dental departments in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the diseases of oral and maxillofacial region.

The department in Government Dental College and Research Institute, Bangalore is well upgraded beyond the requirements of apex and the local body, catering in different divisions like hematology, cytology, histopathology and others like Immunohistochemistry, PCR, colorimetery  and fluorescence.

Department also has a elaborative collection of slides and extensive collection of specimens in the museum which helps in differentiating normal from pathology.

To ensure the proper functioning it is well equipped with regular caliberation. This not only helps the clinician in vital clinical decision making, but also helps to undertake research endeavours of PhD, post doctoral, MDS and undergraduate students of all dental specialities. The department is well equipped for research facilities like pentahead research microscope, Olympus BX- 53 with image progress capture software, binocular microscope, polarised microscope, dark field microscope, fluorescent microscope, stereomicroscope, well equipped immunohistochemistry lab, -80°C deep freezer, temperature controlled centrifuge, biosafety cabinet, real time PCR multiplex.

HISTORY

The department of Oral Pathology started in the year 1974 by late Dr. H R Narayana, who served for 18 years. His extensive knowledge in the field of medical science contributed in a huge way to integrate the subject of Oral Pathology with general and systemic Pathology.

Dr. S Hemavathy joined as lecturer in the year 1981, after completing her MDS she rejoined the department in 1990. The post graduate course in the department of Oral Pathology was started in the year 1991 under the able guidance and leadership of Dr. S Hemavathy. She took over as head of the department in 1998. In her tenure the department got a well-established museum of both hard and soft tissue specimens for undergraduate and post graduate students. In 2002 the department shifted from second floor to Ist floor which was earlier Skin department. Thanks to Dr Ramananda Shetty, with his efforts the whole department was renovated with all the modern Lab equipements like automatic tissue processor, stainer, wax dispenser, tissue embedder and microtome.

Dr. Sahana Srinath joined as Assistant professor in the department in the year 2002 and served for 2 years and rejoined as associate Prof. in the year 2008. The charges of Head of the Department were handed over to Dr. Sahana Srinath in the year 2013 after superannuation of Dr Hemavathy. Dr. Sahana was the first PhD doctorate and was awarded fellowship in IAOMP

Due to her untiring effort with Dr Prithviraj DR  using their contact in the government, the department got a research and development unit such as Polymerase Chain Reaction to keep in pace with changing advancement in the field of oral sciences.

In 2017 the department got PhD recognition.

The Post graduate students  have won accolades by receiving awards at state and national levels by presenting  papers and posters.

Currently the department is efficiently headed by Dr. Sahana Srinath with other staffs working in department Dr. (Capt.) Suresh T (Associate Professor), Dr. Chandrakala J (Associate Professor.), Dr. Satish T Yadav (Assistant Professor), Dr.Suganya G( Assistant Professor), Dr. Jyoti Talawar( Assistant Professor).

Mrs Jayashree M and Mr. Jadeepa C. are working as technicians  in the department.
